Here is me on my recent business trip to Framingham, Massachusetts. It was an amazing trip and experience, and I am very fortunate to have the position that I have right now. It has now been over a month since returning back to the corporate world. It has been an exciting return since being off for over 9 months. The response and support from various family, friends, and co-workers has been amazing.
I always knew that this was going to be the result. I knew getting here would be challenging and there would be a lot of setbacks. In the end, I kept positive, gave my best effort to find the right opportunity, and won at the end. After launching my recent blog on the The Dark Knight Returns Back To Work, there have been a lot of people who have reached out to me and asked many questions. I want to use this blog today to answer the questions that have come up the most, and hope my experience can help others succeed:
1. How do you like your new job?
I have now been at Staples Inc. for just over a month, and it has been a great experience. It is a fast paced environment, and I work with a great team. The support I receive from my leadership team and just many in the organization has been great. There is a lot to learn here, and plenty of opportunities to grow and succeed here. Like many companies and businesses, you have to give it your best efforts and be a great team player.
2. How do you make the time to blog and while working?
For myself, I write and prepare my blogs on the weekends. I basically take Saturday to decide on what I want to write about for the course of the week and do my writing on both Saturday and Sunday. Sunday is the day that I proof read and edit my blogs, then set the timers to have them posted on my various social media channels.
Yes with working, you lose out on having your free time. If you love to do something, you will find the way to make time for it. I really love writing blogs and will continue to do so.
3. How tough was it going back to work after having a break?
It was an adjustment period indeed. Having to get used to getting up at 6am, learning about how a business runs, and excelling in your position was challenging. As the weeks have gone on, things have gotten better. My body and mind is fully adjusted to my new schedule, and I am more confident in what I have to do.
What helped me before I got back work was just keeping busy and not getting used to sleeping in late. I was also finishing school while I was on my break, writing my blog, and went to the gym as well. That really helped to make my transition back to work easier too.
4. What would you like to accomplish next?
I am very proud of myself getting to this point. It wasn’t easy and looking back at 2014, this has been a great year. However, there is still a lot of work to do. I want to definitely grow my career at Staples over the next few years. I would also like to go back to school again in 2015, grow and expand my blog, spend more time with family and friends, and travel some more.
I also have to continue to self develop and improve. As I have gotten older, I know self-development is a priority for me. As much as I have my strengths such as being positive, driven and resilient, I also have areas to improve in as well. At times, I can be stubborn and impatient. I have gotten better here, but self-improvement is always going to be a continuous exercise for myself.
5. What is the best advice that you have to those looking for their next career move?
Don’t ignore and push aside that you want something more. This was something that I did too long. I ignored the fact that I wanted to make changes in both my professional and personal worlds. When you start to become stagnant, it is very tough to climb out of it. I got fortunate and lucky here. I stopped ignoring how I felt and took more risks.
The risks are scary because you don’t know what will happen. What’s even scarier is having regrets many years from now. Take some time to figure out what makes you happy and set goals on how to get there. Don’t just say the goals. Write down your goals and set a plan on how to get there.
I would also say to build your networks and don’t be afraid to ask for help and advice. There are plenty of people who will take the time to listen and guide you. All you got to do is ask.
Being back to work now has been very exciting for me, and I am very fortunate to be in this position. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions on job hunting and career tips. I will be glad to assist and help you.
Have a Merry Christmas and best wishes to you all!
