I was sitting here at the Le Sheraton Hotel in Montreal this past weekend, and re-played a conversation that I had with one of my closest friends years ago. I asked him who he thought was (excluding himself) the most successful person he knows. He said it was ME. At the time, I didn’t know how to react to that and just smiled. Maybe at the time I was looking for him to say someone famous; someone from our school days; or just anyone except me. Looking back, I think it was just selling myself short; not realizing I have accomplished many great things in my life.
I think for many of us, we measure ourselves based on money, the clothes we have, the nice cars and the size of our house. The reality is these are not the things that make us successful. I think what makes us successful is having more of the little things in life, and appreciating them more. Hanging out and spending time with the people who care about us the most. Being able to wake up each day and smile. What about even going for a walk and seeing how beautiful the city is? And let’s not over look the setbacks that many of us have had to overcome, and we are now better for it.
Being away and having time to reflect this past weekend in Montreal has given me a chance to re-look at things. Being able to realize that success and applause is ready for any one of us, if we really want it bad enough. It’s more than just about the money. It’s about inspiring ourselves and others to be happy. It’s about doing things that make us smile and feel alive. It’s about never forgetting that we have one life; and we must make the most of it. It’s about giving ourselves more credit and realizing that we have so much to be thankful for.
Take a moment to really look at your great accomplishments in your life. I am sure that when you really take a look at your life, you’re more successful than you think. That’s my message to you and others: Never forget that we’re more successful than we think!
